🐾What “Fear Free Certified” Means for Your Dog

When choosing a dog trainer, you want someone who not only understands behavior—but truly cares about your dog’s emotional well-being. That’s why I’m proud to share that I am now a Fear Free Animal Trainer Certified Professional to add to my Fear Free Elite Status Veterinary Professional Certification.

But what does that actually mean for you and your dog?

💙 What is Fear Free?

The Fear Free approach focuses on preventing and reducing fear, anxiety, and stress (often called FAS) in animals. It’s not just about training behaviors—it’s about how your dog feels during the learning process.

Dogs learn best when they feel safe, comfortable, and supported—and that’s exactly what Fear Free training prioritizes.

🧠Why Emotional Well-Being Matters

A dog who is fearful or stressed:

  • Strengthens trust with their human

Training isn’t just about obedience—it’s about building a relationship.

🐕What This Means for My Training Approach

As a Fear Free Certified Trainer, I commit to:

✔ Using positive reinforcement-based methods only
✔ Avoiding fear, force, and intimidation
✔ Recognizing subtle signs of stress in dogs
✔ Adjusting training plans to support each dog’s comfort level
✔ Creating a safe, supportive learning environment

This means no prong collars, choke chains, or shock collars—ever.

🌿A Whole-Life Approach

Fear Free isn’t just for training sessions—it’s a lifestyle approach that supports your dog in:

  • Vet visits
  • Grooming
  • Daily routines

I also work closely with owners to help you understand your dog’s body language and emotional needs, so you can advocate for them confidently in any situation.

🐾Why I Chose Fear Free

My goal has always been to help dogs and their people thrive—together. Becoming Fear Free Certified allows me to:

🐶✨Kali Earns Her Canine Good Citizen (CGC)!

There’s nothing more rewarding than watching your dog grow in confidence, skills, and trust—and I’m so proud to share that Kali has officially earned her AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) title!

The CGC is a nationally recognized certification through the American Kennel Club that evaluates a dog’s ability to demonstrate good manners in everyday situations. It’s more than just obedience—it reflects a strong foundation of training, emotional regulation, and a positive relationship between dog and handler.

🎓What is the Canine Good Citizen Test?

The CGC test consists of 10 real-life skills, including:

  • Accepting a friendly stranger
  • Sitting politely for petting
  • Appearance and grooming
  • Walking on a loose leash
  • Walking through a crowd
  • Sit and down on command with staying in place
  • Coming when called
  • Reaction to another dog
  • Remaining calm around distractions
  • Supervised separation from their handler

These skills show that a dog can navigate the world in a calm, controlled, and socially appropriate way.

💜Kali’s Journey

Kali’s journey to CGC wasn’t about perfection—it was about progress, communication, and trust.

Through consistent training using positive reinforcement, Kali learned how to:

  • Stay engaged in distracting environments
  • Offer calm, polite behaviors
  • Build confidence in new situations
  • Every small win added up, and this certification is a reflection of that work.

🐾Why CGC Matters

Earning a CGC isn’t just a title—it’s a meaningful milestone that shows:

✔️ Your dog has a strong behavioral foundation

✔️ You’ve built a positive, trusting relationship

✔️ Your dog can safely and confidently interact in public settings

For many families, CGC is also the first step toward therapy dog work or advanced training goals.

🐕Want This for Your Dog?

The great news? Your dog can learn these skills too—with the right guidance and approach.

At Always Stay Pawsitive Dog Training, I help dogs and their owners build real-life skills using kind, science-based training methods. Whether you’re starting with the basics or working toward CGC, I’m here to support you every step of the way.

✨ Training should feel good—for both ends of the leash.

Easter Holiday Tip

🐣🐰Easter baskets aren’t just tempting for kids… 👀🐶

🍫If your dog doesn’t have a solid “leave it” command, chocolate, candy wrappers, and small toys can quickly turn from cute chaos into a scary (and expensive) emergency.

🤗The good news? This is completely preventable. Professional training can help your dog learn impulse control and keep them safe—not just at Easter, but year-round.

🐕A little training now = a much safer (and calmer) holiday later

👉 Consider working with a certified trainer to build reliable “leave it” skills before the next holiday!

🐾 What Is a Behavioral Consultation? (And How It Can Help Your Dog Thrive)

When your dog is struggling with behaviors like fear, reactivity, aggression, or anxiety, it can feel overwhelming and confusing. You may have tried basic training techniques without success—or even felt unsure where to start.

That’s where a behavioral consultation comes in.

At Always Stay Pawsitive Dog Training, behavioral consultations are designed to uncover the why behind your dog’s behavior and create a clear, compassionate plan to help both of you move forward with confidence.

🧠 What Is a Behavioral Consultation?

A behavioral consultation is a deep dive into your dog’s behavior, history, environment, and emotional state.

Unlike basic obedience training (like sit, stay, or leash walking), behavioral work focuses on underlying emotional responses such as:

  • Fear or anxiety
  • Reactivity toward people, dogs, or stimuli
  • Aggression (growling, snapping, biting)
  • Separation-related behaviors
  • Resource guarding
  • Noise sensitivities

These behaviors are not your dog being “stubborn” or “dominant”—they’re communication.

🔍 What Happens During a Consultation?

During your session, I take the time to truly understand your dog as an individual. This typically includes:

✔ Detailed History Review

We’ll discuss your dog’s background, daily routine, triggers, and behavior patterns.

✔ Behavior Assessment

I observe your dog (in a low-stress, safe way) to identify what’s driving the behavior.

✔ Root Cause Identification

We look beyond the surface to understand why the behavior is happening.

✔ Personalized Training Plan

You’ll receive a step-by-step plan tailored to your dog’s needs and your lifestyle.

✔ Immediate Management Strategies

Learn what to do right away to prevent situations from escalating.

💡 Why Behavioral Consultations Matter

Behavioral issues don’t improve with punishment or quick fixes—they require understanding, patience, and the right approach.

With the right guidance, you can:

  • Reduce stress for both you and your dog
  • Build trust and improve your relationship
  • Prevent behaviors from worsening over time
  • Help your dog feel safer and more confident in the world

🐶 My Approach: Fear-Free & Positive Reinforcement

As a KPA-CTP and Elite Fear Free Certified Professional, I use science-based, humane training methods rooted in positive reinforcement.

That means:

✔ No intimidation or punishment

✔ No “dominance” techniques

✔ No forcing your dog into uncomfortable situations

Instead, we focus on:

  • Teaching new, appropriate behaviors
  • Changing emotional responses
  • Building confidence through positive experiences

📈 What Results Can You Expect?

Behavior change is a journey—not an overnight fix. But with consistency and the right plan, many clients see:

  • Improved calmness and focus
  • Reduced reactivity or fear responses
  • Better communication between dog and owner
  • Increased confidence in handling real-life situations

You won’t be doing this alone—I’m here to guide you every step of the way.

🐾 Is a Behavioral Consultation Right for You?

This service is a great fit if your dog:

  • Barks, lunges, or reacts on walks
  • Shows fear or anxiety in new situations
  • Has a history of aggression or concerning behavior
  • Struggles with being left alone
  • Guards food, toys, or space

If you’re unsure, I’m always happy to help you decide what’s best.

💜 Let’s Help Your Dog Feel Better

Behavioral challenges can feel stressful—but they’re also an opportunity to better understand your dog and strengthen your bond.

With the right support, real progress is absolutely possible.

Fireworks and Dogs: Understanding and Reducing Stress

For many people, fireworks are a fun way to celebrate holidays and special events. For our dogs, however, the loud booms, flashes of light, and unpredictable sounds can be frightening and overwhelming.

Some dogs may show only mild concern, while others experience significant anxiety that can impact their well-being and safety

Common Signs of Firework Anxiety

Dogs may show stress in a variety of ways, including:

  • Panting
  • Pacing
  • Trembling
  • Hiding
  • Excessive barking
  • Clinginess
  • Drooling
  • Refusing food
  • Restlessness
  • Attempting to escape

It's important to remember that these behaviors are not signs of disobedience—they are signs that your dog is struggling to cope with fear.

How to Help Your Dog Feel Safer

Create a Safe Space

Set up a quiet area where your dog can retreat if they feel uncomfortable. This may be a covered crate, a bedroom, or another familiar space where they feel secure.

Reduce Outside Noise

Close windows, blinds, and curtains. Running fans, white noise machines, televisions, or calming music can help mask firework sounds.

Offer Enrichment

Lick mats, stuffed food toys, snuffle mats, and long-lasting chews can help some dogs relax and focus on something positive.

Stay Calm

Your dog looks to you for information about the environment. Maintaining a calm, relaxed demeanor can help them feel more secure.

Keep Pets Indoors

Even dogs that are normally reliable outdoors can panic and attempt to escape during fireworks. Ensure collars and ID tags are up to date and keep dogs safely indoors.

Avoid These Common Mistakes:

  • Forcing your dog to "face their fear"
  • Punishing fearful behaviors
  • Dragging them outside to watch fireworks
  • Leaving anxious dogs unattended outdoors

Fear cannot be corrected through punishment. Instead, focus on creating safety and positive experiences.

When Anxiety Is Severe

Some dogs experience intense panic during fireworks. If your dog consistently shows severe anxiety, speak with your veterinarian before fireworks season begins. There are prescription medications and behavioral strategies that can significantly improve your dog's comfort and quality of life.

Remember:

Your dog isn't giving you a hard time—they're having a hard time.

With preparation, patience, and support, you can help your dog feel safer and more comfortable during fireworks season.
