“My dog knows better.”
“He’s doing it to make me mad.”
“She’s being spiteful.”
But here’s something that completely changes the way we approach training…
Dogs don’t wake up every morning planning how to frustrate us.
Instead…
👉 Every behavior has a reason.
When we stop asking, “How do I stop this?”
…and start asking,
“Why is this happening?”
everything changes.
🧠 Behavior Is Communication
Dogs don’t use words.
They communicate through behavior.
That behavior may be saying:
💜 “I’m excited.”
💜 “I’m nervous.”
💜 “I don’t understand.”
💜 “I’m overwhelmed.”
💜 “This has worked for me before.”
The behavior isn’t the problem.
It’s the message.

Professional trainers often think about behavior using a simple framework:
A – Antecedent
What happened before the behavior?
Examples:
- Doorbell rang
- Another dog appeared
- Child started running
- Food hit the floor
B – Behavior
What did the dog actually do?
Examples:
- Barked
- Jumped
- Pulled
- Growled
- Sat quietly
Describe what you see—not what you think your dog is “trying” to do.
C – Consequence
What happened after the behavior?
Did the dog:
✔ Get attention?
✔ Reach the other dog?
✔ Gain distance from something scary?
✔ Find food?
If the behavior worked…
Your dog is more likely to repeat it.
💜 Understanding Changes Everything
Imagine two dogs barking at visitors.
Dog #1 is barking because:
“I’m excited!”
Dog #2 is barking because:
“I’m scared.”
The behavior looks similar.
The emotions are completely different.
And because of that…
The training plan should be different too.

Instead of asking:
❌ “How do I stop it?”
Ask:
✔ When does it happen?
✔ Where does it happen?
✔ Around whom?
✔ What happened right before?
✔ What does my dog gain?
Those answers tell you where to begin.

When we understand behavior…
We become more patient.
More observant.
More effective.
Instead of frustration…
We become curious.
That curiosity is one of the greatest gifts we can give our dogs.
🚫 What NOT to Do
Avoid assuming your dog is:
❌ Stubborn
❌ Dominant
❌ Spiteful
❌ Guilty
Instead…
Look for the reason behind the behavior.
