🐾How to Teach a Reliable “Stay” (Without Frustration)

🐶 “My Dog Won’t Stay…”

They:

  • Pop up immediately
  • Follow you
  • Break position quickly
  • Sound familiar? 😅

👉 “Stay” isn’t just one skill—it’s actually three skills combined

🧠 The 3 Parts of “Stay”

For a solid stay, your dog must learn:

✔ Duration (how long to stay)

✔ Distance (how far you move away)

✔ Distractions (what’s happening around them)

👉 Most people try to train all three at once… and that’s where things fall apart

🐾 Step 1: Start with Duration

Ask for a sit or down

Wait 1–2 seconds

Reward before your dog moves

👉 Build time slowly

🦴 Step 2: Add Distance

Once your dog can stay for a few seconds:

✔ Take ONE step back

✔ Return and reward

👉 Always go back to your dog

(not calling them out of the stay yet)

🧁 Step 3: Add a Release Cue

This is HUGE.

Use a word like:

👉 “Free” or “Okay”

Your dog should learn:

👉 Stay means stay… until released

🔁 Step 4: Introduce Distractions Gradually

Start small:

✔ Move your arms

✔ Take a step

✔ Add mild movement

👉 Build slowly—don’t jump to chaos

⏱ Step 5: Practice in Different Environments

  • Indoors
  • Backyard
  • Quiet outdoor spaces

👉 Remember: dogs don’t generalize well

🚫 Common Mistakes

❌ Asking for too much too soon

❌ Skipping the release cue

❌ Only practicing in one place

❌ Repeating “stay” over and over

👉 Set your dog up to succeed

💜 What Success Looks Like

A dog who:

✔ Holds position calmly

✔ Waits for release

✔ Can handle real-life situations

✨ Final Thoughts

“Stay” isn’t about control—it’s about clarity and consistency.

👉 Build it step-by-step, and your dog will understand 💜
