🐶 “My Dog Grabs Everything…”
Food on the ground, trash, random objects—gone in seconds 😅
That’s where “leave it” comes in.
👉 “Leave it” means:
Ignore that and choose something better
🧠 Why “Leave It” is So Important
This cue can:
✔ Prevent dangerous situations
✔ Stop scavenging
✔ Improve impulse control
✔ Make walks easier
👉 It’s a real-life safety skill.
🐾 Step 1: Start with a Closed Hand
- Put a treat in your hand
- Close your fist
- Let your dog sniff, lick, investigate
👉 Say nothing—just wait
The moment your dog backs off:
✔ Mark (“Yes!”)
✔ Reward with a DIFFERENT treat
💡 Your dog learns: ignoring gets rewarded
🦴 Step 2: Add the Cue “Leave It”
Once your dog is consistently backing off:
👉 Say “leave it”
👉 Then present your closed hand
👉 Reward when they disengage
🧁 Step 3: Open Hand Progression
Open your hand slightly
If your dog goes for it → close it
If they back off → reward
👉 Progress slowly
🐕 Step 4: Move to the Floor
- Place a treat on the ground
- Cover it with your hand or foot if needed
- Say “leave it”
- Reward when your dog ignores it
🚶 Step 5: Practice in Real Life
Take it to:
✔ Walks
✔ Public environments
✔ Real distractions
👉 This is where it really pays off
🚫 What NOT to Do
❌ Don’t repeat the cue over and over
❌ Don’t expect instant perfection
❌ Don’t punish mistakes
👉 This is a skill that builds over time
💜 What Success Looks Like
A dog who:
✔ Pauses when they hear “leave it”
✔ Chooses not to grab items
✔ Looks to you instead
✨ Final Thoughts
“Leave it” isn’t about control—it’s about choice.
👉 Teach your dog that ignoring things leads to something better 💜
