🐶 What is “Place” Training?
“Place” means your dog goes to a designated spot (bed, mat, cot) and stays there calmly until released.
It’s one of the MOST useful real-life skills you can teach.
🧠 Why “Place” is So Valuable
Place training helps with:
✔ Jumping on guests
✔ Overexcitement
✔ Barking at the door
✔ General calmness in the home
👉 It gives your dog a clear job.
🦴 Step 1: Introduce the Place
- Use a bed or mat
- Toss a treat onto it
- Let your dog step on it
👉 Reward immediately
🐾 Step 2: Add the Cue
Once your dog is consistently going to the mat:
👉 Say “Place” as they move toward it
👉 Reward when they get on
⏱ Step 3: Build Duration
Start small:
- 1–2 seconds
- Then gradually increase
👉 Reward calm staying
🚶 Step 4: Add Distance + Distractions
- Take a step back
- Walk around
- Open doors
👉 Reward your dog for staying on place
🔓 Step 5: Release Cue
Teach your dog when they’re done:
Use a word like:
👉 “Free” or “Okay”
This prevents confusion.
