🐶Why Understanding Stress Matters
Dogs don’t use words—they use body language.
Many “problem behaviors” (barking, lunging, growling) are actually signs your dog is feeling:
- Overwhelmed
- Anxious
- Uncomfortable
When we recognize early stress signals, we can help before behavior escalates.
⚠️ 1. Lip Licking (When Food Isn’t Present)
Quick tongue flicks = stress signal.
Often seen when:
- Being hugged
- In new environments
- Around unfamiliar people/dogs
👉 This is your dog saying: “I’m uncomfortable.”
😴 2. Yawning (When Not Tired)
Stress yawning is different from sleepy yawning.
Common during:
- Vet visits
- Training sessions
- New situations
👉 It’s a calming signal—not boredom.
👀3. Whale Eye (Showing Whites of Eyes)
When your dog turns their head but keeps eyes on something = stress.
You may see:
- Whites of eyes showing
- Tension in the face
👉 This often appears before growling or snapping.
.🐾4. Turning Away / Avoidance
If your dog:
- Turns their head
- Walks away
- Avoids interaction
👉 They are asking for space.
Respecting this prevents escalation.
🐕5. Sudden Sniffing or “Distraction”
Ever notice your dog randomly sniffing the ground?
This can be:
👉 A coping mechanism
Dogs use this to:
- Self-soothe
- Avoid pressure
